Todd Graham Named New Pittsburgh Football Coach

Filed under: Pittsburgh, Tulsa, Big East, CoachingTodd Graham has been hired as the new football coach at the University of Pittsburgh, the school announced via press release Monday night.

Graham comes to Pitt from Tulsa, where he was 36-17 in four seasons. Known as one of the up-and-coming offensive minds, Graham won at least 10 games in three of his four seasons at Tulsa. In 2010, the Golden Hurricane posted a 10-3 mark and had wins over Notre Dame and Hawaii.

"We are thrilled that Todd Graham has agreed to become the head football coach at the University of Pittsburgh," said Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson in a statement. "His innovative, creative and energized approach to football makes him an exciting leader for our program. He has a proven track record of success at all levels of football and his wealth of experience on both sides of the ball gives him a unique set of credentials.

"The outstanding job he has done at Tulsa - double-digit win totals in three of the past four seasons and an undefeated bowl record - has been noticed across the country. I know he is excited to meet his new team and the great people of Pittsburgh."

Graham will be formally introduced at a press conference Tuesday.

"My family and I are honored to join such a prestigious university and rich football tradition like the University of Pittsburgh," Graham said in a statement. "Pittsburgh is a tremendous football city with great fans. We will work diligently every day to earn their respect and build a program that competes for and wins championships. I'm also excited to return to the Big East, a conference that plays tremendous football."

Pittsburgh finished 8-5 this past season, but coach Dave Wannstedt resigned under pressure in early December, as the Panthers failed to meet preseason expectations. On Dec. 16, Pitt hired Mike Haywood from Miami (Ohio). Haywood was arrested on charges of domestic violence on Dec. 31 and was subsequently fired.

Graham becomes the 35th coach in Pitt's history. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments 1383 days
