Luke Donald's Back 9 Takes Tourney, Money Title and Possibly Player of the Year
And He's Not Done Yet....
Luke Donald's finish at Disney defies description, though there will be plenty of them, all superlatives, and all of them apt. It truly was one for the ages, one of the greatest moments in the modern game.
Starting the day five shots behind the leaders, he picked a mere shot heading into the back nine. Trailing by four, no one in attendance or watching in front of their television could anticipate what was about to happen. Donald ran off six straight birdies, rocketed past everyone on the leaderboard closed with an 8-under 64, ending the season with two-shot victory over Justin Leonard. Along the way, he left Webb Simpson in his vapor trail, bith on the leaderboard and on the money list. The feat has to make Donald the clear favorite for PGA Tour player of the year. Even with a major tournament victory this season, Donald climbed to #1 in the world, won the PGA Tour's money title, took home two PGA Tour wins and yesterday, at least for a while, made the golfing world stop looking over its collective shoulder at the spectre of the golfer formerly known as Tiger Woods.
For now, and from the looks of it, for some to come, there's a new sheriff in town, and his name is Luke.
Then again, Donald's year is not quite over. There's a money title over there, as in the European Tour, and Donald has every intention to win that one too. Currenlty leading the Race to Dubai by more than 1.3 million Euros, he's given signs that should the race tighten up, he'll add a European Tour event to his 2011 schedule to protect his lead.
No one has ever held both the PGA tour and the European Tour's money titles at the same time, not the greatest in the game's history or in its recent past. In a few weeks time, Luke Donald, the clear top male player in the world, may be the first to accomplish that. Given the way he's playing, it looks like as sure a thing as there is in the game of golf.
